What is Denodo?

Denodo is a powerful platform to manage and utilize data more effectively. The Denodo Platform allows access and integration of all data, no matter where it is stored or in what format. By using advanced technology called data virtualization, Denodo reduces the need to duplicate data and ensures consistent security and governance. This platform makes it easier for IT teams to manage data, whether on-premises or in the cloud, and enables users to choose the tools they prefer for analyzing data. Denodo features real-time data integration, smart query acceleration, and automated cloud management, making it easy to use and providing fast query responses.

How to Get Started

How do I know if I should use Denodo?

There are many factors that should be considered when determining if you need to use Denodo. The first thing to remember is Denodo is not a data repository, nor is it ‘pre-loaded’ with data. You can use Denodo to connect to other data systems and build integrated data sets using data virtualization. You can then grant permission to use that data set to those who need it.

Here are some considerations when determining if Denodo would be beneficial to your unit(s):

Denodo would be useful if:

  • You want to create curated data sets from one or more data system.
  • You integrate data from more than one data system.
  • You run nightly extracts to copy data from the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) to a local database managed by your department. Instead, you can use the Logical Data Warehouse in Denodo which eliminates the need for downloading the EDW data.
  • You want to integrate data from cloud services with local data.
  • You have data in files (Excel, JSON, XML, Delimited, etc.) that you want to integrate with other data.
  • You publish data sets for others to use for reporting or data analysis.
  • You access data from the Enterprise Data Warehouse to create reports or data visualizations.

You do not need to use Denodo if:

  • Your job only requires that you refresh reports in EDDIE.
  • You create custom reports in Web Intelligence (EDDIE or the Web Intelligence Rich Client) and you can currently get all the data your unit needs from the EDW/EDDIE.
  • Your unit does not have the need to combine data from different data systems.

How do I get access to Denodo?

If you have access to the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) you will have access to Denodo. Specifically, you will have access to the Logical Data Warehouse (LDW) in Denodo. The LDW is an exact virtualized version of the EDW.

Your unit (department, college, etc.) may already have a virtual database set up. If so, contact your unit’s Virtual Database (VDB) administrator for access to virtualized data sets that are published in Denodo in your unit’s VDB.

If the data set you need to work with is located in another college or department’s VDB, contact the VDB administrator responsible for that data set.

If you are unsure if your college or department has a VDB

Contact AITS to inquire. AITS has a list of existing VDBs and the administrators for those VDBs. The easiest way to contact AITS is to use the Data Integration and Virtualization (Denodo) service form.

If your unit does not have a VDB

AITS can create one for you. The first step is for your college or department to identify who will serve as your unit’s VDB administrator. Skills required to be a VDB include understanding database concepts including:

  • Database Administration
  • Understanding of database technologies
  • Knowledge of database schemas, tables, and views
  • Experience with database security concepts, including granting access to tables and views and row and column level restrictions.

Once your college or department has identified a VDB administrator, the next step is to submit the form to request a VDB.
