What is Denodo?

Denodo is a powerful platform to manage and utilize data more effectively. The Denodo Platform allows access and integration of all data, no matter where it is stored or in what format. By using advanced technology called “data virtualization,” Denodo reduces the need to duplicate data and ensures consistent security and governance. This platform makes it easier for IT teams to manage data, whether on-premises or in the cloud, and enables users to choose the tools they prefer for analyzing data. Denodo features real-time data integration, smart query acceleration, and automated cloud management, making it easy to use and providing fast query responses.

What is a virtual database?

A virtual database is a data management system that lets users access and query data from multiple sources as if they were all part of one single database. By using a technique called "data virtualization", a virtual database system creates a unified view of your data, so you don't have to copy or manually combine data from different databases. This means a user can easily get the information they need from various sources through one simple interface, making data management and analysis much more efficient.

What is a Denodo Virtual Database Administrator?

A VDB administrator is a member of a college or department and is responsible for assisting with the request and setup of a virtual database for their unit. The virtual database is where administrators and developers make connections to data sources and developers build virtual integrated data sets. Administrators also assist in managing the roles and permissions to the virtual data sets. Administrators should be familiar with database tables, views, and roles.

How do I identify my Virtual Database Administrator?

If your unit already has a Virtual Database Administrator, and you do not know who to work with, AITS can help identify the person(s) who are members of your VDB Administration active directory (AD) group.

If your unit does not already have a Virtual Database, and you do not know who the VDB Admin would be, AITS will collaborate closely to determine who could be a VDB administrator for your unit.

What is a Denodo Developer?

A Denodo developer builds virtualized data sets from one or many data sources, allowing consumers to access and analyze data. Denodo developers often possess the technical ability to write queries, transform data, optimize performance, design data models, and understand business intelligence & data warehousing concepts.

What is a Denodo Consumer?

A Denodo consumer uses virtualized data sets to query, visualize, and analyze data. Denodo consumers may use various tools to connect to developed data sets to create reports, dashboards, and data models to make decisions, track progress, and improve processes.

What is Denodo Design Studio?

Design Studio is the interface for developers who create different types of elements like data sources, base view, derived views, published web services, and more.

What is the Denodo Data Catalog?

The Data Catalog is a web-based self-service tool included in the Denodo Platform that lets both technical and business users query, search and browse information and metadata stored in a Virtual DataPort server. With this tool, users can generate new knowledge and pave the way to make better decisions.

What is the Denodo Scheduler?

Denodo Scheduler allows the scheduling and execution of data extraction and integration jobs, as defined on the different modules of the Denodo Platform.

Where can I find resources to learn how to use Denodo?

The Datahub is a great place for resources to learn how to use Denodo. You will find links to knowledgebase articles, access to training, and information about how to get help and support from AITS.

The Denodo Community website also has a library of information, including white papers, job aids, virtual training, and more on the Denodo Community page.

Do I have to pay for Denodo training?

No. Fees for all Denodo training offered in the Denodo Community are waived for all university staff. For information on account registration and training access, see the vendor-led training knowledgebase article.

How do I request a virtual database?

If your unit already has a virtual database in Denodo, you do not need to request another one. If your unit does not have a virtual database, the first step is to identify the person or persons who will be the VDB Administrator(s) for your unit’s VDB.

The VDB Admin will need to request the VDB by using the Denodo Service Form.

Select Request Virtual Database in the Request Type drop down when filling out the VDB Request form.

How do I log in to Denodo?

To Login to Denodo, go to https://datahub.uillinois.edu. Click Denodo Login on the Datahub home page.

It is important to note that you must first be given access to Denodo by your Virtual Database Administrator. Please contact your VDB Admin for help with access to Denodo.

How do I get access to a virtual database?

Your Virtual Database Administrator is responsible for providing access to your unit’s virtual database. Access to your unit's VDB is handled through Active Directory (AD) groups. Your VDB Administrator can provide access to Denodo by including you in one of your unit's Denodo AD groups.

What is the Logical Data Warehouse (LDW)?

The LDW is a logical/virtual representation of the Enterprise Data Warehouse. When using the LDW, Denodo queries the EDW to retrieve the data.

Can I access the Enterprise Data Warehouse in Denodo?

Yes. If you have access to the EDW you can find all the EDW data assets in the Logical Data Warehouse. If you do not have access to the EDW and would like to have access to the EDW and LDW you can work with your USC to submit an access request to the EDW.

Can I make my own connection to the Enterprise Data Warehouse?

No. Multiple connections to a data source can cause performance issues in both the source system and in Denodo. Therefore, AITS has virtualized the EDW as the Logical Data Warehouse on your behalf.

What access do I have to the Logical Data Warehouse in Denodo?

Access to the Logical Data Warehouse is synchronized from the Enterprise Data Warehouse every night. Your access in the LDW is the same as the access you have in the Enterprise Data Warehouse. This is true for EDW Application Accounts as well.

Why would I use the LDW instead of the EDW?

Use the LDW if you need to join data from your own datasets with data from the warehouse. The advantage of using the LDW is you can do data integration without having to copy data from the EDW to a local data system.

Can I access Denodo from other tools such as DBeaver, Tableau or Power BI?

How can I easily include table and column comments from my relational database in the Denodo Data Catalog?

In the data source configuration section in Design Studio your VDB administrator will need to set the remarksReporting value to true. By doing this, table and column comments in your relational database metadata will be automatically ingested into Denodo.
