    Q. Can I customize the URL of my SharePoint site collection?

  1. All site collection URLs begin with  There are four sublevels (or "managed paths") to choose from:
    • for large college or departmental site collections where organizational subsites can be created
    • for individual and very specialized use.  Check<netid> first to see if this meets your needs
    • for projects and project teams.  These site collections usually have a lifespan equal to the length of the project.
    • for individual offices, committees, working groups, etc.
    Once you choose the appropriate manage path, you can customize the URL suffix for your site collection when you submit your request.  Examples:
    After your site collection is created, the URL cannot be changed.
  1. Is a VPN connection required to access SharePoint?
  2. No, SharePoint site collections are accessible without the requirement for a VPN connection.
  1. Is authentication required to access SharePoint?
  2. Yes, you required to enter your Active Directory credentials when accessing any SharePoint page or resource.  SharePoint sites cannot be configured for anonymous access.

  2. The following are just some of the ways SharePoint is being used by the university: public calendars, group collaboration, asynchronous document storage, streamlining and automating business processes, project management, electronic forms, and help desk ticketing.

  2. Yes. SharePoint works well with tablets, iPads, smart phones, etc.
  1. What is the cost to use SharePoint?
  2. SharePoint is free to groups affiliated with the University of Illinois System. A basic set of services are supported such as Office Web Apps and document storage.  A second tier of more complex services such as connectivity to external databases, business intelligence capabilities, and sandbox features has been discussed, but not available until this is more clearly defined and these services can be expanded and supported.
