Project Description
This project will deploy two endpoint management solutions for use by University of Illinois units. The endpoint management solutions will include IBM TEM (formally known as BigFix) and Microsoft SCCM. The objective of this project is to implement an initial (limited) deployment of both TEM and SCCM for use by early adopters groups at all three campuses and UA. This project will focus on developing a service that has the potential to scale to the entire enterprise. Hardware and software infrastructure for TEM and SCCM will be setup and configured by deployment teams so that early adopter groups can immediately benefit from an endpoint management solution and contribute to the development of an enterprise solution. The deployment teams will collect data about the service including: ease of management, scalability to the enterprise, functional effectiveness, and impact on end users.
The initial deployment includes the following:
- Providing hardware and software infrastructure services
- Develop a long term plan and provide training and support
- Create the framework for a sustainable service
The Office of the ECIO is sponsoring this project and providing project management resources. In addition, financial resources for this project were provided by Provosts on all three campuses plus University Administration. As of this point a formal project charter has been developed and was approved by Michael Hites and the campus CIOs. We are still in the early planning stages of the project and a website is in development which will provide scope, milestones, project information, and how to participate.
What is Endpoint Management?
Endpoint management allows desktop and server administrators to manage networked desktop, mobile, and server computers. SCCM and TEM are the two systems that are being implemented. EPM functionality include, but not limited to, Hardware Asset Management, Application and Patch Management, Software Updates, Power Management, Remote Functionality, Software Distribution, and OS Deployment.
