Using U of I Box

If you are currently a University of Illinois faculty, staff, or student, all you need to login to your U of I Box Individual (Enterprise) account is your U of I username and Active Directory password (Urbana-Champaign campus), ACC password (Chicago campus), or netid password (Springfield campus).

NOTE: If you already have a Personal (free) Box.com account and would like to upgrade to a U of I Box Individual (Enterprise) account, see Personal Accounts & U of I Box.

 

 

Creating and Setting Up Your U of I Box Individual Account

  1. Visit https://box.illinois.edu/. Click Sign Up or U of I Box Sign up page.

  2. Select your campus, and enter your NetID and campus password. This will take you to the Box Sign Up application.

  3. Click Create Account.
  4. If you see the “Success!” screen, your account has been created! You can now click Go to My Account or return to https://box.illinois.edu/ and click Continue to use your U of I Box account.

  5. If you see the error, “Box Account Conflict!”, this means that you have a Personal (free) account that uses your university email account. Please see Personal Accounts & U of I Box for instructions to correct this problem.

  6. If you see the error “You already have a Box Account!”, use the instructions in the following sections of this page to log into your U of I Box account.

  7. If you see the error, “Your account is not authorized to use the Box.com signup application”, you may not be registered as a current University of Illinois faculty, staff, or student. If you are denied a U of I Box account but believe you meet U of I Box requirements, please contact your campus helpdesk.  If you have any questions regarding special cases, please send an email to box-contact@uillinois.edu.

Requesting a Team Folder for Your Unit, Group, or Department

If you wish to request a Team Folder that will belong permanently to your group or department, see Create & Manage U of I Box Team Folders. On this page, you will find instructions for requesting a new Team Folder through your campus help desk. You will also find more detailed information and instructions for its use.

Using U of I Box on Your Windows or Mac OS X Computer

NOTE: If you already have a Box.com Personal (free) account and would like to upgrade to a U of I Box Individual (Enterprise) account, see Personal Accounts & U of I Box.

Login on Windows or OS X

To login to U of I Box:

  1. Visit https://box.illinois.edu/.
  2. Click Log In.

  4. Select your campus and click Select Your Campus.

  6. Enter your NetID and Active Directory password.
  7. You will be redirected to your U of I Box account.

Personal Accounts & U of I Box

If you currently have a Personal (free) Box.com account and you wish to upgrade to a U of I Box Individual (Enterprise) account, you will have to create your new U of I Box Individual account and copy your files from your Box Personal account into your U of I Box Individual account.

NOTE: If you used your U of I email address for your Box Personal account, you will have to change your Box Personal email address to a non-university email address before you will be able to use U of I Box. See How do I Change My Email Address or Password? on the Box website for instructions.

Move from Box Personal to U of I Box:

  1. Sign up for your new U of I Box Individual account.
  2. Manually copy & paste your files from your Box Personal account folders to your U of I Box Individual account folders.
  3. Change the ownership of your Box Personal account folders:

    1. From your Box Personal account, invite your U of I Box Individual account to collaborate on a folder.
    2. From your U of I Box Individual account, accept the invitation.
    3. From your Box Personal account, mark your U of I Box Individual account as the folder owner by entering the folder, mousing over your U of I Box Individual account name, and selecting Access: Folder Owner.
    4. Confirm the change by pressing Okay.
  4. If you are a collaborator on a folder that you are not the owner of, you will have to have the owner re-collaborate with you through your U of I Box Individual account.
  5. Once the preceding steps are completed, you can delete your Box Personal account if it's not needed.

How to Login using Sync

If you would like a way to directly access to your U of I Box files without a web browser (as though U of I Box were a file folder on your desktop), you can install Box Sync.

  1. Log into https://box.illinois.edu/ with your @illinois.edu, @uis.edu, or @uic.edu email address & password.
  2. Go to https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/categories/200052148-Box-Sync to download and install Box Sync for your system.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install and use Box Sync.
  4. When Sync asks for authentication credentials, enter your campus email address (NetID@campus.edu).
  5. Click the checkbox for Use my company's single sign-on credentials.
  6. Click the Submit button.  This will open a new window that will start the authentication process that the website uses.
  7. Type in your NetID and campus password to log in.  You will not need to do this everytime and you will continue to be logged in until you click the Logout button from the Box Sync settings.
NOTE: If you are uploading 100mbs or more of files at the same time (or single file that is 100mbs or larger), we recommend you use Box's Bulk Upload Tool instead of Sync.

How to Login using an iPhone or iPad

  1. Install the Box application from iTunes and open the application.
  2. Choose I have an account.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, choose More login options.
  4. Enter your @illinois.edi, @uis.edu, or @uic.edu email address.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Choose your campus and click Select this campus.
  7. Enter your NetID and campus password.
  8. The Box app will display your files.

How to Login using an Android Device

  1. Install the Android Box app and open the application.
  2. Select the Log In tab.
  3. Select Log in with SSO.
  4. Enter your @illinois.edi, @uis.edu, or @uic.edu email address and click Log In.
  5. Choose your campus and click Select this campus.
  6. Enter your NetID and campus password.
  7. The Box app will display your files.
